I was about to suggest this, then I noticed it was already mentioned in that thread:

It seems odd to modify HTTP because of dissatisfaction with or unsuitability of the media type registration process. There's nothing technically wrong with using Accept for this purpose; registering a single media type supporting parameters to serve this purpose seems like a much better idea than making content negotiation even more complicated.
