Perhaps it's better to say that this is a personal preference.  One 
that client software should take into account.

Being able to see the content creator categorizations is worthwhile.  
I may want to "follow" material categorized in this manner.  Being 
able to add on more categorization material is also worthwhile.  A 
client that allows for 'pivoting' the views on this column of data 
seems like a really good idea.

I'm with you vis a vis the context switch hassles.  However, consider 
that more than one context is useful depending on the intent.  A 
reverse chrono with no channel divisions is great for some folks.  I 
personally don't like it.  I prefer a reverse chrono format within 
each channel in a given hour.  Determining which channel goes first 
is perhaps a hassle, FIFO usually wins.  Being able to do this with 
categories would be very, very cool.
