Regarding file extensions:

I've always been partial to whatis.com's listing. 3181 formats listed. Last
updated apparently 29 April 2000, so I guess it's not maintained since they
were bought by TechTarget. Shame -- whatis.com was (and still is mostly) a
great resource. Much better in it's older "clean" interface though... :(
