In my case it is not officially an HTTP proxy.

In the wireless space (802.11), a lot of companies use the captured portal
approach to authentication.

Basically this just means that when you put in an 802.11 card you get an IP
assigned via DHCP.  Then when you try to go to a website, say slashdot.org, they
assume you are a user agent (and not a headless agent) and that you actually
want to authenticate.

They then steal your HTTP stream via their routing config and redirect it to
their authentication systems.

This totally breaks applications that expect a clean stream.  IE my Reptile app
expects XML and is given HTML via their redirection an it breaks everything :(
