[syndication] Really Complex Syndication

In the news industry, NITF and NewsML are definitely being used. Reuters has
been the most active promoter of NewsML and delivers some content out that
way. A number of other news agencies seem to be headed toward use of NITF as
being somewhat simpler and adequate to their needs.

If you want to take a look at a site that uses NITF, NewsML and RSS, try
going to www.aregon.com, registering yourself as a user and specifying some
news interests.

When you look at news headlines on your personalized "My Aregon" page, the
headlines come from RSS files generated in response to a query associated
with your user profile and submitted as an XML message to the API for the
RAPID Publish system from KnowledgeView Ltd. (the company that I work for,
hence my knowledge of what's going on behind the scenes). If you click on
one of the headlines, you will see the full story as an NITF file displayed
as HTML through a stylesheet transformation on the server. RAPID Publish
normalizes to NITF stories that arrive in a variety of different formats. If
you select a Reuters story, it will have arrived in RAPID Publish as a
NewsML file and been then transformed to NITF for delivery to the Aregon
system, which uses RSS and NITF to generate its presentation of personalized
news content.

Sorry for the long-winded description. But it seemed like a good example of
real-world use of NewsML, NITF and RSS. If you (or the programmer at a
professional CMS company you mention) would like to know more about it, you
could follow up with me directly.
