Thanks Adam,

The problem was with the server serving up the files.

It was fixed with a mime type addition to the mime.types file
application/sgml       exts=xml

Do you mean that the server won't serve the files, or that the client doesn't understand that they are XML? If it's a problem of client understanding, try setting the MIME type of XML files to text/xml on the server.
