Indeed it is a morass. It seems the various developers have
forgotten the idea of cooperating for the greater good. They've also
forgotten the practice of submitting RFCs and following guidelines.
There's nothing preventing the various vendors from putting forth
fresh protocol handlers. It seems they're just not willing to do the
work and stand up to the scrutiny such efforts require. But hey,
it's all steaming full speed ahead anyway.
What would be most excellent would be for someone to sit down and
write an inbound proxy for these various ports. Something that
understood internal client sessions. Oh wait, Microsoft has already
done this with the .Net framework and the my.Net services! But since
it's from that great satan in Redmond nobody wants to touch it. So
they continue to wail and moan about it not existing in open source.
Jabber's got the right idea and it's slowly gaining momentum. It's
but one key in a very big puzzle.
