Subject: [syndication] New Syndic8 Feature -- Personal Subscription Lists

Hello Everyone,

We have a cool new feature on Syndic8 that should be of
interest to the syndication group.

The new feature is a personal subscription list of your favorite
feeds and categories of feeds. Whenever you are logged in
to Syndic8 and are looking at a feed info page or the
category browser and see a feed or category that you like,
you can now click the "Subscribe" link to add the feed or
the category to your personal subscription list.

The subscription list is just that, a list of the feeds and
categories that you like. Subscribing to a category is
the same as subscribing to every feed in that category.
Category subscriptions are totally dynamic -- your
subscription list effectively includes all of the feeds
in the category _as of the time you retrieve the list_.
For example, say that you subscribe to the DMOZ category
Business : Management : Consulting and it has just one
or two feeds in it. Later, as more feeds are assigned to
this category, they will automatically show up in your
list.

You can see your subscription list at any time by
clicking on the "My Subscriptions" links on the feed info
page and the category browser, or by clicking on your
name in the menu bar (where it says "logged in as ....").

There is also a help page for this. Click the "About
Subscriptions" link to read it.

This may not sound too terribly exciting so far, but
wait, there's more!

Here's the really interesting part:

All of this functionality is available from outside of the
site using a combination of XML-RPC calls and the
  XML feeds!

Using the XML-RPC calls documented on the Services
page (http://www.syndic8.com/services.php#PersonalList)
you can subscribe to categories and to feeds, retrieve
your subscription list(s) and more. This page refers to
a special account option called "PersonalList". All
existing Syndic8 accounts and all new ones, will have
this option turned on.

Using the XML feeds documented on the XML page
(http://www.syndic8.com/xml.php) you can retrieve
your personal subscription list in OCS or OPML form. By
supplying your User ID and your encrypted password
to the genfeed script, you can get your own list instead
of the global list.

The intent here is to allow other sites and applications
to use Syndic8 to store subscription information. I am
planning to release a version of Headline Viewer that
will do just this, and I hope that others will follow suit.

Your personal subscription list is stored on the Syndic8
server, and no one else can see it. In the future there
will be some statistical information available about
the subscriptions (most popular subscribed feeds
and so forth), but there will not be a way to trace this
back to any particular user. The Syndic8 database
is backed up off-site every night to guard against
data loss.

One interesting aspect to the subscription model is
that each user can actually have any number of separate
and distinct lists, each identified by an integer index.
Right now there is no on-site UI which lets you access
anything except your primary list (also known as list 0);
it can only be accessed using XML-RPC and the XML
feed. Eventually you should be able to use List 0 as your
favorites, List 1 as temporary bookmarks, List 2 as
the list you share with your friends, and so forth. All in
good time.

Note that this is an "enabling technology" that will
open the door to some neat and exciting new features
in other sites and tools, and I am ready and able to
help make these things happen. Put on your thinking
caps and let your imagination run wild, then let me
know how Syndic8 can help.

Enjoy!
