You could dummy-strip HTML tags in my AmphetaDesk [1] with
a one line modification of the templates. Something along
the line of:

 $item->{description} =~ s/<(.*?)>//gi;

Again, this is a "dummy-strip" - it can fail sometimes (and will remove 
non-HTML bits of text, like <bob> hi, cindy! <cindy> hi, bob!), but it'd 
quickly do what you're looking for.

I'm, of course, assuming you mean "item description" in place of "actual 
article" and "downloads the RSS feed" for "pulls back the web page".
