Ben Hammersley's got a book coming out in April. Meanwhile there is a Chapter
in the XML Handbook that discusses RSS.
As for 'rolling your own' it's not terribly hard. But consider there are a
number of subtleties to XML that can trip you up. Things like case sensitivity
and character encoding are important. Then it's just a matter of putting
'enough' data into your feed that makes it useful. There are channel header
things and extra item things. Start by looking at the reference section I
manage on Syndic8.com:

That should give you enough to get things going.
