I have been thinking some of the same thoughts, and agree that this is
the way to go.
That way, all your statements are about the image, which is what is
interesting - presumably the HTML page is just for presentation, and
aggregators will just see a title and description as usual.
Also, you can then add extra information about the image, i.e. point to
a thumbnail version, declare image size, camera type etc.
You might want to have a look at Jon Hanna's mod_image [1] and a W3C
note on this [2].
