I didn't realize it stretch that far back - were they one of the early RSS
adopters?

That sounds like a pretty reasonable balance - unfortunately, until they
place something more meaningful into the title of the items, it makes it
that more difficult to quickly scan a list of items.

As far as the inbox cluttering problem - not an issue for me.  I set up
rules for incoming messages from groups to filter them into separate
folders.  When I want to check them, I can, otherwise they're sitting in a
separate folder for me to come back to at a later date.
