I've been lurking on this list for quite a while now, but today I
started trying to write my own aggregator and realised how challenging
it actually is! I've been making notes as I go along, and in doing so it
struck me that the syndication community could benefit greatly from a Wiki.
Just off the top of my head, the kind of content that could be
accumulated on a syndication Wiki could include:
* A list of RSS content providers
* A comprehensive list of aggregators
* Links to RSS tools (such as the fantastic validator)
* Tips on aggregator implementation
* Notes on dealing with invalid feeds, badly formed XML etc
* Ideas and discussions for future developments (like the recent
xhtml:body stuff)
* RSS autodiscovery tips
* Frequently Asked Questions
* Summaries of recurring debates that people are sick of explaining to
newcomers
For those who haven't come across Wikis before, they are a special form
of web site where every page on the site can be updated by anyone
directly through their browser. Pages are added using a simple Wiki
markup language, and vandalism is protected against by a public revision
control system.
The model I'm basing this suggestion on is the css-discuss Wiki
(disclaimer: I helped set it up):
http://css-discuss.incutio.com/
Since its inception, this has (in my opinion) proved a valuable
companion to the main css-discuss mailing list. I feel sure that the
same could be true for a [syndication] wiki.
