A journal does this, so does a diary, so does a portal, likewise a full-on CMS like Vignette /can/ also do this. Now, /do/ they? Ah,not all do.
Don't forget the killer VoAL (vi on Apache and Linux) one-two-three punch. The term "blog" used to mean something when it clearly denoted a "web log" (or even "we blog"?) - now its just a barrier that stands between us and mass market opportunities. The internet is fraught with stupid things that average users have a hard-time grasping - trying to shoe-horn a non-sensical term like this into their vocabulary (forget about realm of understanding) seems to be asking a little bit much.
I guess what I'm saying is that I tend to agree that there's not a lot of value in defining what a blog is - from a tools perspective. I suspect that there's a lot more fun to be had trying to understand how users interact with the tools and what the implications of that behaviour is.
