RE: [syndication] Re: BBC News RSS

Thanks to Jeff and pavka14 for spurring us into action on the RSS
directory front.

We've had a go at producing an OPML file for each of our sites outlining
the RSS feeds available on the site. An example of this can be found at

http://news.bbc.co.uk/rss/newsonline_uk_edition/feeds.opml

That said we have implemented a bit of a hodge podge of attributes for
the outline tags because we have been having difficulty finding a
definite list of which outline attributes should be used for listing RSS
files in OPML and the examples have been found are not entirely
consistent for example

In Jeff's,
http://www.syndic8.com/genfeed.php?Format=opml&UserID=jeffbarr&List=14
outline text attribute is set to the channel title tag
outline description attribute is set to the channel description
tag
outline xmlUrl attribute is set to the URL of the RSS feed
outline htmlUrl attribute is set to channel link tag
outline language attribute is set to the the language of the RSS
feed
	has an outline id attribute.

In Dave's, http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/myPublicFeeds.opml it is
basically the same but
outline type attribute is set to 'rss'
	no id attribute
	no language attribute
	no htmlUrl attribute

I've also seen
outline version attribute is set to 'RSS' e.g.
http://www.w3os.nl/logos/opml/rss.opml and
http://www.labourstart.org/rss/labourstart.opml

outline title attribute is set to the channel title tag e.g.
http://www.lockergnome.com/rss/lockergnome.opml

We also have a deep tree structure for the sections in our site which we
have flattened out when listing our RSS feeds in this OPML file. We did
this because we were concerned that existing parsers used by News
Readers and aggregation sites may not parse this correctly.

Any indication of where to find a definitive guide to which attributes
to use or feedback on improving the OPML file we have produced would be
welcomed.

Joel

I created a Syndic8 Personal List with the newest BBC feeds. You can
download the list in a variety of formats:

OPML:
http://www.syndic8.com/genfeed.php?Format=opml&UserID=jeffbarr&List=14
OCS:
http://www.syndic8.com/genfeed.php?Format=ocs&UserID=jeffbarr&List=14
RSS: http://www.syndic8.com/genfeed.php?UserID=jeffbarr&List=14

You can also see the contents of the list on my user page:

http://www.syndic8.com/userinfo.php?Section=list_14

If you want to learn more about the Personal List system, take a peek at
this:

Enjoy,

Jeff;
