The practice of pinging is rapidly becoming something that will give established aggregation siets a type of lock-in, as it will be increasingly difficult to get bloggers to ping new (and increasingly numerous) aggregators. For a variety of reasons, it is preferable to have numerous aggregators - to help ease the RSS load on individual sites, for example, and to allow the proliferation of niche aggregators. For this reason may I recommend that someone set up a 'ping-central' that will allow blogs to ping once, with the ping echoing to any aggregators that register for the service. Should anyone author the code, I would be happy to host it if needed; I have ample bandwidth and server space (no Java, please).

While your updating your code to ping Syndic8, please also consider pinging
PubSub.com. If you ping us, we'll fetch and match your content to our user's
subscriptions much faster then if we have to crawl for your new entries. We
