ISO 8601 ("YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS" with an optional TZ) is my first
preference, although for human readable formats the one outlined in
RFC822 and followed up in RFC1123 and used in HTTP (RFC1945) is
acceptable.

ISO 8601 looks fine to me to. After all, it's not that hard for a human to
read it and converting it to human readable code is very easy.
