They didn't, but I believe this was implied by the fact that Netscape has
stopped working on RSS and (nearly?) all of the the people who used to work
on the project have since left the company.

I don't see how this is an issue. So what if Netscape decides on something
different? (which I think is unlikely) How does that negate any of the work
being done on RSS? Why does it prevent you from supporting it? The format
stands independent of anything Netscape says. If they don't like us calling
it RSS, then we can change the name, but that doesn't change the format at
all.
Perhaps I'm misunderstanding something,
