Re: [syndication] Re: [RSS-DEV] RSS-Classic, RSS 1.0 and a historical debt
I would second the concept of changing the name now and moving on. The main
reason (and please, do not assume that I am taking any camp on this) is the
confusion that could happen if an effort to develop another branch of RSS
were to go under way. What would happen then? What I foresee is that we
would end up with two version of RSS 1.0. The one we now have in front of
us and the one that would emerge out of other efforts.
When I look back at history, I shudder at the thought of several standards
being called the same thing. We saw it happen with unix, we almost saw it
happen with HTML (remember the Netscape/Microsoft division and imagine what
would have happened if the W3C had not existed) and I would hate to see it
happen with RSS. Technically, neither Dave Winer nor this group has any
claim to RSS, since RSS most prominent developer was Netscape.
Looking for a solution, we have to consider what work has been done on RSS
with RSS 1.0 and figure out that it extends the functionality of the
previous format. Hence, the name XRSS seems to make sense as it is eXtended
RSS.

Well maybe that should tell you there is still a real problem. Look, this
thing is
past the point of justifications being important. Im sure your position is
justified. Rather now this is only a political matter. It relates to
what feels
right and what feels wrong to a real people out here. Now, personally I
don't have
any vested interest (ego) in either the WG group or in Dave's group. But
it doesn't
feel right to me. I don't understand the divisive stubbornness that
keeps the WG
from just changing the name. But I do see the political magic that would
happen if
we just changed it. Especially since XRSS is the better name anyway and
actually
names this thing politically correct.

Start anew
Change the name!
