Each of the vendors who had the first product in the given niche had the
opportunity to assert a trademark. Whether they chose to do so or not is
irrelevant.

I'd also point out that the use of the word "radio" in this context is a
completely new metaphor.

Uh, but what about Corel Draw, MacDraw, Microsoft Word, AbiWord,
MacPaint, PaintBox, and a whole laundry list of similarly named
products producing essentially the same results?
