I haven't looked closely at Jabber's capabilities, but do
not discount other publish/subscribe systems like Elvin
(http://elvin.dstc.edu.au/). In fact, the Elvin authors
have been running a program to scrape RDF/RSS from certain
web pages (such as Slashdot and Australia's ABC news) for
some time. The whole site's details are not published,
however - only the new stories. Rather than subscribing
only on the channel name you can also filter based upon
attributes and content of the feed. These notifications can
then be viewed by Elvin applications such as Tickertape.
