Re: [syndication] My.UserLand.Com aggregator turned off
The reasons for turning off the aggregator..
We believe in decentralization. We want to drive features that are really
P2P, right now the pub-sub stuff is centralized on our community server, but
Mike Krus just announced that he's supporting it on NewsIsFree. I want to
try to bootstrap a community of people running full peers on their desktop,
we have more software coming for this, and a centralized server is not the
answer although it was in 1999, but this is 2002. End-Of-Free only begins to
capture the motivation, also the user base is getting more experienced with
networking and cool tools that help them do more interesting things with
their comfort are possible now, that weren't possible then. People who peer
are still pioneers, but there are more of them now than there were before.
Anyway -- to clear up any confusion regarding what happened in
My.UserLand.Com, we just turned off the aggregator. In technical terms this
means that we set aggregatorThread.enabled to false. The thread just doesn't
run. It was a total CPU hog at the top of every hour and very few people
were using it. Further, as others have said, Syndic8 is doing a better job
at curating RSS feeds than we could hope to do. We can also make better use
of the machine, which also runs some of our most popular sites like
xmlrpc.com among others.
So the bottom-line is that what made sense in 1999 no longer made much sense
in 2002, few people were using it, and it was costing us to keep it running.
