RE: Re[2]: [syndication] Re: [rss] [2000-05-11] RSSx "Straw-Man" (repost)
Ian,
>From my perspective the high level objectives of extending RSS would be:
Defining metadata within a URL or portion within a URL for data that is
'dynamic' i.e. not just news headlines but weblog items, auction items etc.
The ability to extend RSS - prob through namespaces.
The ability to define an RSS channel owner as an aggregator of individual
items whose sources are listed at the item level.
i.e. not just <item>, <title>, <link> and <description> but
<item>,<title>,<link>,<source>,<source_link> and <description> or somesuch.
Transaction payment data (to bring RSS inline with ICE).
Better update and authentication info e.g. ability to include an MD5 hash
which can be checked at specific times.
Removal of 15 item limit.
Content tag to include tokenized or digest content.
Possible element only (no attribute) schema to help embedding of RSS
metadata as data islands within HTML etc.
(as an example we harvest news from sites which already output in RSS. We
end up going straight to the HTML so that we can index full text. It is
easier for us to create our own RSS style metadata from the HTML than
harvest from both the RSS and HTML output and risk them both being out of
synch. If the metadata were already tagged within the HTML then this would
be easier for everyone e.g. <div class=rss:title>...)
Ability to tag the content type for an individual item, based on a URI for a
taxonomy e.g. news item, book item etc.
But above all, despite the above, to keep it simple and backward
compatitble!
