That's a very good idea, and it's orthogonal to this "direction". I plan to
write a spec for publish-and-subscribe via RSS by adding to the header of a
channel enough information for a syndicator to contact a publisher saying "I
want to be notified of any changes to this item." I haven't written the spec
yet, so this is not a RFC, just a heads-up saying "I'm interested in this
too."

One more vote for formality. If an idea is worth considering, it's worth
writing up, and it's worth answering questions and taking feedback. I used
to do this stuff by the seat of the pants too, until I realized that the
only projects that ever got anywhere were the ones where people had the
discipline to write specs to explain their ideas.
